Summary report and outcomes for the event "Education and Prospects for Sandwip Island"
The summary report of the Informative event organised in Sandwip, Bangladesh in the late December 2014, regarding Ocean Literacy and RISC-KIT is now available.
Mohammad Muslem Uddin, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, in the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, organised an information and dissemination event regarding Ocean Literacy and the RISC-KIT international Case Study site of Sandwip Island, between the 27th and 30th of December 2014, in Sandwip. The event, which was organised after the request of the local community, qas supported by the NF-POGO-Alumni Network for Oceans (NANO) and the Consorzio Futuro in Ricerca (CFR), one of RISC-KIT's partners.
The geographical position, the frequent occurrence of extreme climatological events and the socio-economic regime in Sanswip Island, Bangladesh, transforms effective Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) measures in an extremely challenging task. Regardless the immeasurable difficulties, continuous effort for early warnings and for a community-based response framework has significantly reduced the loss of lives in the past decades. One of the biggest challenges in the region is to provide reliable and easy-to-understand warnings on coastal flooding in the district and sub-district level and thus, the work done during RISC-KIT will provide the base and demonstrate the future directions towards these actions.
The information and dissemination event, organised by As.Prof. Udin, assisted in providing essential education guidelines as well as future prospects for the increase of coastal resilience in the area and was very succesfull, as the comments of the participants demonstrate. You can learn more through the summary report of the event, available in .pdf here.
