1st Italian RISC-KIT Stakeholder's Day

The 1st Stakeholder's Day for Italian end users took place on 19 October in Bologna, Italy.

Consultation with dedicated end users was held in Italy last month, on 19 October in Bologna. The purpose of the consultation was to consider different points of view of stakeholders as part of an evaluation of the social, cultural and political feasibility of measures to reduce coastal risk.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Geological, Seismic and Soil Service, a formal end user on the RISC-KIT project and represented by Dr. Luisa Perini, together with Dr. Grit Martinez of Ecologic, Germany and partners from Consorzio Futuro in Ricerca (CFR), Italy.

The meeting consisted of a series of plenary presentations as well as interactive round table discussions. Participants were also invited to take part in a serious game that recreated a storm scenario from February 2015, reliving the issues faced and the actions taken.

Topics covered during the consultation included:

  • The application of RISC-KIT’s decision support system;
  • The improvement of regional coastal early warning systems;
  • Strategies for coping with the retreat of man-made protective structures in the most vulnerable areas of the region’s coastline;
  • Adaptation of man-made structures to cope with and increase resilience to climate change;
  • Intelligent coastal management and multi-faceted approaches to protection and mitigation;
  • The creation of standards for the construction of protection measures based on scientific assessments;
  • Improvement of communication with the public;
  • Moving from reactive to proactive approaches to dealing with coastal risk.

The meeting saw the participation of thirteen end users including the civil protection authorities to team workers from the operational rooms in Bologna and Comacchio.
