Lydia Cumiskey Brings the Young Scientists Platform to the 2nd RISC-KIT "Summer" School

Part of the DRR Working Group of the UN MGCY Young Scientists Platform on DRR

We were delighted to be joined by DRR expert, Lydia Cumiskey, for the latest RISC-KIT Summer School. Lydia, a contributor to the RISC-KIT project, currently based at the Flood Hazard Research Centre of Middlesex University, London, gave a talk entitled, "Mobilising Young Scientist Contributions to Disaster Risk Reduction." There was no better person to bring this topic to the next generation of flood risk scientists, as Lydia herself is a DRR team co-coordinator for the Water Youth Network and a European Focal Point for the DRR Working Group of the UN MGCY Young Scientists Platform on DRR.

The Young Scientist Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction was launched in January 2016 during UNISDR's Science and Technology Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The UNMGCY DRR Working Group aims to facilitate youth-led and intergenerational training, knowledge transfer and mentoring, providing young scientists with a platform to contribute to Sendai Framework implementation, monitoring and review. The platform also aims to showcase youth-led actions on DRR and support these and other youth-led initiatives.

The UN MGCY is the formal UN general assembly mandated, self-organised space for children and youth to contribute to and engage in certain intergovernmental and allied policy processes related to sustainable development, within the UN system.

Since 1992, facilitated youth participation through the Rio+20 process, Open Working Groups (OWGs) and the Post-2015 intergovernmental process - along with the following processes: DRR, FfD, WHS, Habitat III, SCP, SIDS, HLPF and more.
